Seriously, I think I”m done with the difficult. Finished. No more. I’m ready for that kicking back, pop-open- an-adult-beverage-and-flop-on-the-couch kind of easy. Maybe even for longer than an episode of ‘Modern Family‘…I’m sick of the hard stuff. I want the easy life.
At least for one day.
I’m tired of fighting bureaucracy at work. I’m done with problem solving, thinking outside of the box, and work-arounds. I just want it to be easy-peasy. I’m sick of thinking so hard. Yes, right now I want the easy way out.
Would it be too much to ask for one day of easy? One day without the big email asking me to do something else, or schedule a pointless meeting? Or maybe just an afternoon when someone doesn’t make me cancel my plans to meet their needs. Just an afternoon to do…something easy. Like take a nap.
Is it the lack of sleep that’s doing me in? The stress of demanding parents, students with March madness and daylight savings all rolled into one?
I understand why Thomas Fuller penned this quote-in the 1600s, not much about life was easy at all. And then you died – young. He was, however, one of the first writers actually able to live off of his writing-and we know how difficult that can be.
But in this time, why does it have to be difficult before it is easy? Shouldn’t life be less harsh, simpler to navigate with all our modern conveniences and medicines that keep us living far longer than ever before? I promise-just this once, if it’s easy and never difficult, I won’t tell anyone. It’ll be our little secret.
I promise I’ll stop complaining, I’ll grade my papers on time, and get all the filing done. The laundry will be folded and put away. The emails will be returned in a timely manner, and all will be well. We will sit down to a multi-course family meal, and the kids will eat all their vegetables.
I’m done with the difficult. You win. Pop open the drink and hand me the remote. I think there’s a new episode on.
